NEDA, a leading nonprofit dedicated to the causes of eating disorders, has operated a helpline that has supported countless people through chat, phone calls and text messages for two decades.
The trust service included wage workers, supervisors, and volunteers who chose to unionize because they felt overwhelmed and “inadequate.” They pushed for better staffing, training and promotion opportunities. After the union won the National Labor Relations Board election, staff members were suddenly notified of their dismissal and were replaced by Tessa.
NEDA says this transition is part of a long-planned strategy to increase support for people with eating disorders. Developed by a team at the Washington University School of Medicine, Tessa is described as a “health chatbot” trained to solve body image issues.
