Another lawsuit between Sonos and Google ended in victory for the audio company: The tech giant will be fined $32.5 million for violating Sonos’ patent for multi-speaker audio sync technology in products like Chromecast Audio and Google Home.
However, the court rejected four other claims by the developer against Google for infringing a second patent on device control using smartphones or other devices, Gizmochina notes. Sonos was unable to conclusively prove that the Google Home app violated it.
Commenting on the decision, Google representatives stressed that the dispute concerned specific limited-use features. The tech giant explained that of all the patents originally filed by Sonos in this case, only one has been found to have been infringed.
At the same time, Sonos claims that Google “systematically” violates the developer’s patent rights. Proof of this are the previous decisions of the International Trade Commission.
In 2021, the audio manufacturer has already won similar cases against the corporation, and overall, the developer claims infringement of more than 200 of its patents. And the company remains determined to seek just punishment from Google and appropriate fines in its favor.
