Before enabling the so-called offline mode for Google Docs or Sheets, you need to make sure you’re using Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Although Opera and Firefox are also based on Chromium, offline options are not available here. Also, the mod only works in the default mode of Chrome or Edge; so you cannot do this while using apps in incognito tabs.

Offline mode can be enabled on the web, through the browsers mentioned above, as well as through apps that Google has released on both Android and iOS. First, let’s look at the web options.

Using Google Docs Offline

Make sure you meet the requirements above and then go to docs.google.com or Sheets.google.com. Please note: You need a working internet connection in the first place. So see this as a precaution.

  • Now click on the hamburger menu on the left (these are the three lines in the corner)
  • click Settings and a new window will open
  • In this window, you will find, among other things, the title. Offline also
  • To the right of the text is a slider; turn it to the left to turn it blue

Now you can use any document from Google Docs or Sheets when you don’t have internet access. You can also specify whether you want to edit the document offline. This is how you can open a document. File and enable make available offline. Then this particular document is always available on this device.

By the way, you have to repeat these steps on all the devices you are working on. You make such a file or all files available offline only on the computer on which you installed it. When you make changes and connect to the internet again, all these changes are synchronized with the documents in the cloud.

Also mobile apps

You can also do this via the Android or iOS app. Of course you need the Google Docs or Sheets apps for that. Open the app and log in with your account.

  • Now press the hamburger menu on the left
  • press the button for Settings and find the option Offline
  • Move the slider to the left to turn blue

You can now edit that document offline on the smartphone or tablet you set it up for. All changes are synced when you connect to the internet.
