“We’re going to show you how xroOS This opens the door for you to create amazing spatial experiences.” This is one of the phrases that Justin Thomas, App Store Connect engineer, mentions at one of the WWDC 2023 developer sessions, and for the first time he says “xrOS”, referring to the Apple Vision Pro operating system.

Thomas, really. uses the word “xrOS” a total of 45 times during a 12-minute video showing how to make apps available in the App Store for VR and AR headsets despite the fact that the operating system is actually it’s called VisionOS.

Under no circumstances during a session can you listen to visionOS, which is, we repeat, the official name of the operating system for Vision Pro. A name that Apple has used on various occasions to indicate the capabilities of the interface during the product’s launch. No, it is not an additional operating system, nor is it a parallel or similar platform.

Why xrOS instead of visionOS?

The reason the engineer calls xrOS in the video is because this is the obvious codename used by Apple at any time to develop your operating system. And apparently, at least according to Mark Gurman, bloomberg, this was to become the commercial name for Apple’s Vision Pro operating system. In fact, the aforementioned journalist stated before the official launch that the company planned to call its glasses Apple Reality Pro, although they ended up being called Vision Pro.

xrOS stands for Augmented Reality or Augmented Reality. This is the name of the combination of virtual reality and augmented reality. But given that the glasses are called Vision Pro, it does not make sense to call the operating system that way.

But, why does an apple engineer call xrOS instead of visionOS? Probably because the session was recorded before the company finally decided on the official name of the operating system. This means that Apple decided on the name almost at the last minute, because although there are no details about it, the session would have been recorded for a couple of months at most.
