Apple just introduced VisionPro, their mixed reality glasses, but they are already working on a cheaper version. Following its announcement and amazing features, one of the biggest criticisms the device has received is its $3,500 price tag. It is expected to top €4,000 when it goes on sale in Europe.

According to Mark Gurman, in his Sunday newsletter, he reiterated that Apple is working on a cheaper Vision Pro, which will be released two years after the already announced ones. That is, between 2025 and 2026, depending on the region. The strategy will be similar to that of the iPhone or Mac, where there is a more advanced version with a higher price and one with lower power specifications but cheaper.

According to the report, Apple could use lower quality screens, a cheaper chip to manufacture, fewer sensors, or less capable cameras. But this is enough to support mixed reality.

They may also release a simpler design that requires another external device such as AirPods for surround sound. They can also simplify the components to accommodate the distance between the eyes or remove the camera in three dimensions.

The surname Pro Apple Vision Pro is not accidental.

Use Pro in the name Apple Vision Pro is no coincidence. This is a way of signaling that this device is intended for professional use. Either as a work tool with mixed reality goggles, or to develop apps for the device.

Apple’s challenge will be to find ways to lower the prices of future mixed reality headsets. Especially considering that at the current price of Vision Pro makes almost no profit. Large-scale production and the associated reduction in the cost of components will be key factors in making them cheaper. But for this they need to sell much more, and the only way out is to lose many months or a couple of years.

Apple has 10 to 11 months to best communicate all the good reasons why it’s worth paying $3,500 for the Vision Pro. However, this is the first version of something much bigger, a new era in the world of computing in which we finally get rid of screens, if only for personal use.
