public betas of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, watchOS 10, and macOS Sonomaare now available for download. The company has announced the ability for any user to install a trial version on their compatible device and test new features before the official launch, which is scheduled for this fall.

Still iOS 17 beta —and other new versions for Apple operating systems—, I was designed for developers so that they can adapt their applications and services to the new characteristics. While the update could be easily installed from Apple’s settings, these were initial versions that usually contain more bugs or come with features disabled.

On the other hand, the first public beta corresponds to a later release than the initial developer beta. And while it’s not guaranteed to be as stable as the final updates, it’s better optimized. It also includes features that were not available in previous versions, such as NameDrop, an iOS 17 feature for sharing contacts via AirDrop.

iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 are now available in public beta

The iOS 17 public beta, in fact, contains almost all the news that Apple announced during WWDC. Among them, we repeat, NameDrop as well Standby mode, which allows iPhone to display relevant information, such as the time or weather, when the device is charging in a horizontal position. iOS 17 also includes so-called contact cards, interactive widgets, and new features in apps like Messages. Now, for example, you can reply by swiping on a message, transcribe audio notes, or filter search results.

Other iOS 17 features, such as the ability to invoke Siri by simply saying “Siri” or collaborative Apple Music playlists, will be made available in future releases.

iPadOS 17Also available today in beta, it has pretty much the same features as iOS 17, including interactive widgets, improved messaging, and more. The new version for iPad also contains the ability to customize the lock screen. That’s exactly what we’ve been able to do on the iPhone with iOS 16 already, as well as performance-focused features. Among them is the ability to edit PDF with Apple Pencil.
