Apple is working on an iPhone with a bezel-less OLED display.
Apple is facing technical difficulties in getting a bezel-less display on the iPhone, but it’s already starting to address them!
According to some leaked images, the absence of a notch and thinner bezels will be the main innovations of the iPhone 15. Well, this change will be just the beginning of the transformation in the iPhone screen, which aims to eliminate bezel thickness in the generations we will know in the medium term.
According to a post shared by Asia-based The Elec, Apple has asked Samsung and LG Display to develop new OLED display panels to implement them while keeping the current design of the “iPhone”. Everything points to the fact that the bitten apple will avoid resorting to curved screens offered by other brands of ultra-thin bezel smartphones, due to concerns about optical degradation and durability.
A bezel-less iPhone may arrive in 2025
To meet the demand for new OLED display panels, Samsung Display and LG Display are developing organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that remove all bezels on the iPhone’s front display. Apple is reportedly seeking frameless displays to facilitate advanced thin-film encapsulation (TFE) and under-panel camera (UPC) technology, as well as increase space and reduce interference for components such as antennas. And maintaining a flat screen design allows for these improvements that are not possible with a curved screen today.
If Apple’s plans continue, the company may offer a bezel-less OLED display with the launch of the iPhone 17 Pro in 2025. While that expects the iPhone 15 in 2023, it’s rumored that the iPhone 17 will be the first to feature Face ID technology under the screen, along with a punch-hole cutout for the front camera.
Moreover, Apple wants to offer a bezel-less version before introducing its own proprietary microLED display technology on future iPhones.. Thus, the 2025 Apple Watch Ultra, which will already be thinner from this year, will be the first device with a microLED display, followed by the iPhone in the following years.
Apple’s goal will not be easy to achieve. Therefore, the company has decided to shrink the front bezel of the iPhone as a previous step. LG Display’s recent failure to meet Apple’s requirements also relates to Apple’s attempt to make the lower bezel of the iPhone 15 Pro series thinner instead of nonexistent.
