iOS 16, the new version of the operating system for the iPhone, is full of small new features that Apple did not mention during the presentation, but which can be very useful in everyday life. One of them is related to security and in particular how we unlock our device. Apple in particular now allows you to use Face ID even when iPhone is held horizontallyjust like with the iPad Pro.
The company has confirmed this feature on a news page on its website. Apple specifies that “Face ID works horizontally on supported iPhone models”, so all those devices with a True Deph camera that are eligible for the iOS 16 update will get the ability to unlock the iPhone, even if it is in a landscape position. Remember that the list of compatible iPhones goes from iPhone 8 to iPhone 13.
This function also available on iPad Pro with Face ID, this can be useful, for example, if we are watching a video or browsing in landscape mode, the terminal is locked and we need to unlock it. Until now, if a user wanted to unlock it without changing the position of the iPhone, they had to wait until Face ID recognized faces and then turn on the unlock code.
The first developer beta of iOS 16 is already showing this feature in action, and after first contact, I can assure you that the unlock speed is the same as we perceive when activating Face ID in a vertical position. The terminal also recognizes a face from any angle, even if it is on a flat surface.
iOS 16 Coming This Fall With Great News
iOS 16 includes other features beyond the ability to use Face ID when iPhone is held horizontally. One of them, and perhaps the most interesting – lock screen redesign. The new version of iOS now lets you add preview widgets like headphone battery, activity status, or weather. You can also customize the clock with different styles and colors, and add blocking backgrounds with depth effects or filters.
The new version, on the other hand, includes improvements in some core apps, such as Mail, Photos, or Home. Also new features based on artificial intelligence. Among these are the ability to separate an object from the background in an image, or the ability to copy text that is shown in a video.
iOS 16 is currently available in developer beta. The public beta will be available from July, the company confirmed. The final version, on the other hand, will appear in the fall.
