Apple’s iOS 17 update for iPhone may not be as feature-rich as previous versions, but it’s still a valuable update worth your attention. Among the new tools, our favorites are interactive widgets and StandBy apps. Unfortunately, Apple and other companies haven’t paid enough attention to this latest feature, and that’s a shame.

Some people think that StandBy is nothing more than a way to turn your iPhone into a digital watch, but it’s much more than that. With Standby mode, you can quickly and easily access the information that matters most to you just by looking at your iPhone. Apple initially displays data from its own Calendar, Clock and Reminders app, but third-party apps are also supported if the developer chooses to do so.

Getting started with Standby mode is as simple as connecting your compatible iPhone to a power source and placing the phone in either portrait or landscape orientation. The best MagSafe mounts are best for this purpose, although any mount will do.

Sleep mode only works on iPhones that support Always-On Display. This includes the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

While the number of third-party apps that support standby mode is small, that number should grow significantly in the coming weeks and months. In the meantime, here are a few great ones to get you started.

If you like to plan your cruise trips months in advance, the countdown feature will be especially useful. It’s nice to have a visual reminder of your next flight.
