Qualcomm announced this Tuesday (24) its new generation of premium chipsets for mobile phones. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 promises powerful generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities, high performance and improvements for console-quality gaming.

The main pillar of the chipset is the use of generative AI. The company highlights, among other things, its partnership with Meta to use its large language model (LLM) Llama 2 on devices. Therefore directly from mobile phones equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Users will be able to create visuals and have voice interaction “in less than a second”.

The company explains this Running language models directly from devices has a privacy advantage as the data is processed locally. The new chipset can execute up to 20 tokens (or 10 billion parameters) per second, based on the Llama 2 7B, for example. According to the company, there is a 98% speed increase in the Hexagon NPU with 40% more efficiency compared to the 8th Generation 2.

At the heart of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Qualcomm brings a new CPU architecture (64-bit and 4 nanometers) consisting of:

  • 1 main core (Arm Cortex-X4) up to 3.3 GHz;

  • 2 efficiency cores up to 2.3 GHz;

  • 5 performance cores up to 3.2 GHz.

According to Qualcomm, the format has up to 30% faster performance. With the Adreno GPU, there is an improvement of up to 25% in speed and a 25% increase in efficiency. The company also reveals that the component has made major progress for games:

  • Real-time hardware acceleration of ray tracing;

  • Unreal Engine 5 Lumen Global Lighting and Reflections Support;

  • HDR for gaming with 10-bit color depth.

Qualcomm emphasizes that the launch brings the Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0 (AFME) feature. It can basically re-render frames to make the gaming experience smoother. This way, games running at 60fps can be played at 120fps, with twice as many frames per second.. It is worth noting that Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 supports displays from 1 Hz to 240 Hz.

In its announcement during the Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm announced that the chipset is expected to come to mobile phones of brands such as Asus, Honor, iQOO, Meizu, Nio, Nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Redmi, RedMagic, Sony, vivo. , Xiaomi and ZTE.

Camera with artificial intelligence and powerful features

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 brings a number of AI-based improvements to cameras. For example, it brings a New function called Video Object Eraser that allows you to remove objects and even people that appear unintentionally in videos. Additionally, it can “stretch” images by creating areas that may have been cropped from the frame.

The chipset’s technical data sheet includes support for up to 200MP cameras and uses AI to determine autofocus, exposure, and white balance. In addition to Rec.2020 formats and 10-bit colorization, it also supports video recordings up to 8K with HDR.

It is also possible to capture 10-bit videos in HEIF and HEVC formats. Another feature that the company highlights is the ability to record with Night Vision mode.

In terms of connectivity, the chipset is compatible with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 and 5G (with X75 modem). As for charging, the 8th Gen 3 supports Quick Charge 5, which accepts chargers above 100 watts.

As for memory, the new chipset is compatible with LPDDR5X models (up to 4800 MHz) and up to 24 GB in total. Manufacturers will be able to use higher speed UFS 4.0 memory in storage.
