Apple has introduced an alternative version of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 that will be sold in the United States. Sales of the devices were suspended in December 2023 by order of the United States International Trade Commission (USITC).
The change is that reworked versions of the smartwatches no longer feature a pulse oximeter, which infringes on the intellectual property of medical equipment specialist company Masimo.
The devices are only available in documentation for now. Masimo’s lawyers point out that U.S. officials understand that the new hours “fall outside the scope” of the USITC decision.
So far, Apple has not commented on the issue. But it should only be a matter of time before the company announces the change publicly and lists it on its Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 pages.
Currently, Apple’s objection to continue selling the devices is also being evaluated during the objection process.
The change does not affect devices that have already been sold
It’s worth noting that Apple is working again It will only apply to the new Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. In previously sold devices, the pulse oximeter would still be functioning normally.
Although Apple has not commented on the issue, it is not possible to conclude whether these reworked versions will be sold in markets outside the United States or whether there will be a price difference due to the lack of domestic sources. Moreover, there is no estimate as to when these versions will go on sale.
