They take apart the new MacBook Air with M3 chip and find some surprises
iFixit has thoroughly evaluated the MacBook Air M3 and confirmed its best features!
MacBook Air update with M3 chip, introduced a few weeks ago, came to the iFixit team to completely tear it downjust like we are used to. In this in-depth evaluation, its components were analyzed and from there the repair capacity was determined.
The patient process is available on the iFixt YouTube channel. In this you can see the similarities with its predecessor, but above all, It’s a big little difference that makes this the most powerful MacBook Air ever made.
iFixit takes apart the MacBook Air M3
interior MacBook Air M3 is almost identical to MacBook Air M2 with almost identical design. So there are four screws to open the bottom panel, a pair of battery units held by easy-access adhesive on the bottom, and a logic board on top that houses the M3 chip and other components.
When you get to the logic board of the 256 GB MacBook Air M2, you can see that the SSD is slower than the storage in the MacBook Air M1. This was because Apple equipped its base model M2 machines with a single-chip SSD instead of the previous model’s dual-chip SSD, resulting in much slower speeds than the previous model. Thanks to these changes; The MacBook gets incredible speeds from dual-chip SSDs, and now iFixit’s teardown physically confirms it.
The teardown team ran Blackmagic’s Disk Speed Test tool on the M2 and M3 models with a 5GB file size test. It found that the SSD in the 13-inch MacBook Air and M3 model with 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM achieved up to 33% faster write and 82% faster read speeds. Compared to the SSD of the M2 model.
After complete disassembly iFixit gave the MacBook Air M3 a preliminary score of 5 out of 10 for repairability.
