Manzana is finalizing the final details of the WWDC 2024 developer conference, one of the most important in a long time. The advent of artificial intelligence and its integration into the iPhone has created expectations that have not been seen for many years. People not only want to know what artificial intelligence will offer, but also measures Apple has taken to ensure security on all your devices.

Regarding the latter, several sources have revealed the security mechanisms that will be implemented on the iPhone to protect your information. According to a report from Information, Apple will use a virtual black box to process data from artificial intelligence applications. The system is so secure that no one, not even an Apple employee, can access it.

The virtual black box is part of the ACDC project (Apple chips in data centers, an acronym in English), an initiative that includes proprietary servers to perform the most complex artificial intelligence tasks. Apple is installing M2 Ultra chips in its data centers to offer some artificial intelligence features from the cloud while maintaining user data privacy.

Apple’s black boxes will operate under the concept of confidential computing, a technology that isolates data to protect it during processing. Apple will control both hardware and software directly from its data centers.. Both the data and the methods used to process it. They will be invisible to any employee of the company. or an external supplier.

Apple wants to keep people’s information safe, so it will protect its artificial intelligence in virtual black boxes. The system will be complemented by on-device processing to perform less demanding tasks.

How Apple’s virtual black box for artificial intelligence works

The black box method is based on technology known as confidential computing. According to IBM, this method isolates sensitive data in a secure enclave within the CPU, which is protected by built-in encryption keys. The keys cannot be hacked and are only accessible through the application code.

Data is stored in memory until processed. Once decrypted, they remain invisible to the operating system and other computing resources. Neither Apple employees nor the cloud service provider will be able to view them. If malware attempts to obtain the keys, the enclave denies access and cancels the settlement.

In the case of devices Apple introduced Secure Enclave several years agostarting with the iPhone 5s, iPad Air, and older MacBook Pro models with Touch Bar. This security engine protects sensitive information such as biometrics, passwords and encryption keys, preventing hackers from gaining access to it.

“Secure Enclave is isolated from the main processor to provide an additional layer of security and is designed to keep sensitive user data safe even if the application’s processor core is compromised.”

Idea Scaling to process and protect AI data is Apple’s next step.. If confirmed, the information will be classified to such an extent that the company will not be able to transfer it even by court order.
