After the recent event Samsung Galaxy without packagingAll eyes are now on Google, which will be unveiling its series Google Pixel 9 August 13 What can we expect from the new Pixel phones? Android Authority says the camera will be significantly improved across the board.
Google’s Pixel phones have consistently received high marks for their cameras. With the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, new Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold on the horizon, it looks like the company’s strength in this aspect of smartphone tech is secure.
The company is expected to replace most of the sensors in this year’s Pixel phone lineup. On the regular Pixel 9, that means replacing the Pixel 9’s Sony IMX386 ultra-wide-angle lens. Google Pixel 8 with the new Sony IMX858. This lens is larger and more versatile than the previous model, especially in low light conditions.
Google is keeping the same main sensor (Samsung GNK) and the same front camera (Samsung 3J1), but there’s one more change coming. The standard Pixel 9 will feature an autofocus front camera for the first time, similar to last year’s Google Pixel 8 Pro, which had a fixed-focus selfie camera.
On the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL, we can expect to see the same Sony IMX858 sensor that the Pixel 9 uses in its ultra-wide lens. While we expect minimal changes to the ultra-wide and telephoto cameras on the two phones, the sensor should be a significant improvement on the front camera.
Android Authority explains that the Pixel 9 Pro’s front camera will be “an absolute beast compared to most other devices,” as Sony’s new sensor is designed primarily for rear cameras, making it much larger than the front cameras on other phones.
In a nutshell, this is the camera lineup for the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL:
- Pixel 9 – Main: Samsung GNK 1/1.31″, 50MP OIS, same as Pixel 8; Ultra Wide: Sony IMX858, 1/2.51″, 50MP, new; Front: Samsung 3J1 1/3″, 10.5MP, now with autofocus
- Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL – Main: Samsung GNK 1/1.31-inch, 50MP OIS, same as Pixel 8 Pro; Ultra Wide: Sony IMX858 1/2.51-inch, 50MP, new; Telephoto: Sony IMX858 1/2.51-inch, 50MP OIS, new; Front: Sony IMX858 1/2.51-inch, 50MP autofocus, new
Android Authority also has new information about the camera on the upcoming Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which is expected to replace Pixel fold first generation. Interestingly, some of the changes are abbreviations.
We should see a Samsung 3LU (1/3.2-inch) for the phone’s ultra-wide camera, which is an improvement over the Sony IMX386 found on the Pixel Fold. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s selfie cameras, meanwhile, will be upgraded to a Samsung 3K1 (2/3.94-inch) instead of the Sony IMX355 and Samsung 3J1 found on the previous model.
Why the cut? Android Authority says the compromises are necessary given that the next foldable Pixel is expected to be nearly 2mm thinner. It says, “Let’s hope the new sensors don’t impact camera quality too much.”
The report also notes that an improved version of the Pixel Camera app will mean support for 8K recording at 30 fps for at least one of the new Pixels.
