Following the news of a revolutionary new foldable smartphone that may (or may not) be coming anytime soon. Huawei teased a new, less revolutionary foldable phone that is sure to arrive soon. In a video trailer posted on the official Weibo social media page, Huawei showed off the Huawei Nova Flip, which takes a different look at the current “big screen” trend.
The video shows the Nova Flip folded and unfolded, with the former orientation revealing a small square display. This is different from the current crop of compact foldable phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 And Motorola Razr 2024which have large external screens that take up most of the panel. The idea is to improve usability when the phone is closed, as both apps and widgets can be used.
The Nova Flip cover takes up about a quarter of the closed front of the phone, so instead of apps, you’ll see widgets at best. It comes with two cameras and a flash, but no details on the specs have been revealed yet. Other images show a power button that likely includes a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, a USB-C port, and a hinge design.
In the video, Huawei relies heavily on two things: touch controls and color. The phone is clearly lime green, and that shade is used throughout the video. We expected Huawei to introduce more colors, but green may be the star of the show and is likely one of the brightest options. Otherwise, it’s a nice sound. click and the feeling that accompanies it when you close the phone.
This isn’t Huawei’s first compact foldable phone. In 2022, the company launched the P50 Pocket, a foldable phone with a luxurious design and a small circular screen on the cover. This isn’t the first time the Nova name has been abandoned, either, and it has previously been used on more affordable devices. As such, the Nova Flip will likely compete with the Razr 2024 more than the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s price. The Nova Flip will be officially announced soon, as Huawei has confirmed that it will be fully unveiled on August 5 in China.
