Apple is preparing to add support for digital car keys to the Wallet app for Audi, Polestar and Volvo vehicles. The news comes courtesy of MacRumor’s discoveries in Apple’s line of code.

There are three methods to use Apple CarKey:

  • Passive opening: You need to have your iPhone or Apple Watch with you to open, close or start the car. It turns on when you approach the car and vice versa, turns off as you move away. You can easily start inside the car. iPhone 11 or later required, Apple Watch requires Series 6 or later.
  • By proximity: You need to hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near the door handle or key reader. You need to hold your device close to the door to turn it on or off. To get started, you need to place the iPhone over the key reader or bring the Apple Watch closer, then start the car.
  • Remote: Here you need to open the Wallet app and click on the car key. Different functions will appear, be locked, unlocked or booted. You also need an iPhone 11 or later, Apple Watch Series 6 or later, and be within Bluetooth range of the car.

Additionally, Apple also includes support. express modeFace ID allows you to open the car door through authentication via Touch ID or passcode without having to unlock your device. It is also possible to share the digital car key with other users via Messages, Mail or AirDrop.

Apple CarKey function was born in 2020, and digital key support was implemented in 2022. Since then, brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Lotus have been incorporating this function into the technology of their vehicles.
