Don’t zoom in on the Statue of Liberty in the Maps app on your iPhone, something disturbing will appear
Something strange and scary appears when you zoom in on the Statue of Liberty in Apple Maps
iPhone Maps app has undergone a rather surprising evolution in recent years, after a somewhat hasty launch. Moreover, perfect design and in my opinion it is superior to Google Maps. One of these design features is that we can see different historical artifacts in cities, such as the Statue of Liberty in New York, in 3D.
This 3D view of the Statue of Liberty It looks quite nice on the normal map, not on the satellite version, which looks much more realistic. But they noticed on Reddit that when you zoom in on a face, something scary and quite disturbing appears.
When you zoom in on such monuments in Apple Maps, they become transparent so you can see what’s behind them. However** when we do this on the Statue of Liberty we will see a very different face than the one it actually has**. Hairless and with huge eyes that were quite scary.

This is because some of the top layers like hair or crown are not shown in this “transparent mode”. Instead, when we move away, an inner layer is revealed that cannot be fully appreciated. We understand that this is just a mistake and unless it was done on purpose there should be an easy solution.
Curiously, The same thing does not happen with other monuments. Most buildings designed in 3D in Apple Maps do not become transparent when you approach them; You just walk through it. The Statue of Liberty is the only large statue I’ve found designed in 3D in Apple Maps, so I haven’t been able to replicate this image anywhere else.
In Spain, we have long been able to enjoy this type of experience on Apple Maps, with monuments such as the Royal Palace in Madrid, the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona or the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia. Additionally, Apple Maps has been improved with new functions added in iOS 18. Those that came before, like Guides in Apple Maps. Yes really The interior of the Statue of Liberty is still very gloomy Let’s hope Apple improves upon realizing this.
