Ookla recently conducted 5G speed and latency tests for the series. iPhone 16. The results showed that these phones performed exceptionally well compared to their predecessors and major competitors, even outperforming the series. Samsung Galaxy S24.
According to Speedtest data collected from 11 selected countries around the world, the iPhone 16 series outperformed the previous iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 series in terms of speed and latency. Compared to competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S24, the iPhone 16 had mixed results, but still scored well overall.

The iPhone 16 series showed a statistically significant advantage in average 5G download speeds in five of the eleven countries studied. In contrast, the Samsung Galaxy S24 family had the best average latency across multiple 5G servers in eight countries, while the iPhone 16 lineup led the pack in 5G latency in one market.
Additionally, the Galaxy S24 family showed average 5G charging speeds in eight out of eleven countries, while the iPhone 14 and 15 models generally have the slowest charging speeds.
Overall, the iPhone 16 models showed a significant speed advantage over previous-generation Apple and Samsung devices in markets like Canada, France, Taiwan and, most importantly for most of you reading this, the United States. In the US, for example, the iPhone 16 had an average download speed of 324 Mbps, while the Galaxy S24 lagged behind with 287 Mbps. It’s a similar story in Canada, where the iPhone 16 had download speeds of 182 Mbps. The Galaxy S24 achieved an average speed of 156 Mbps.
Speed and latency tests were conducted from September 20, the first day of the iPhone 16’s launch, to October 20. They were held in the USA, India, Taiwan, Belgium, France, Germany, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, Colombia and Brazil.
With Black Friday just a few days away, Ookla suggests these results prove that upgrading from an older iPhone is worth it for anyone who wants the best 5G has to offer, at least in some countries. He notes that “iPhone 16’s outstanding performance is hard to ignore and makes a compelling case for an upgrade.”
Moreover, he explains: “Does this mean that users in these regions should immediately update the system? Not necessarily. The decision to upgrade depends on factors other than network performance, from price to new features and many other factors. However, our initial data on the 5G capabilities of the iPhone 16 series is encouraging in the early days of its launch.
The iPhone 16 series includes iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. These phones are notable for being the first iPhone series to support Apple Intelligence. All four models also offer new camera controls and more.
