Mac Studio, which Apple announced in March of this year and which includes really powerful features compared to the rest of the models in the Mac line, may not have a very promising future. At least that’s what Mark Gurman of bloombergwho revealed the company’s plans for future Mac mini and Mac Pro ARM chips and believes that the aforementioned model, which is able to offer a configuration that includes the M1 Ultra chip, is simply a jump to the Mac Pro.

Excluding the Mac Pro, a model that Apple still offers but with Intel processors, Mac Studio is the most powerful model in the company’s catalog. At least in terms of hardware with an Apple Silicon chip. It’s even more powerful than the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro in its most complete configuration. This makes it an ideal option for professionals who are looking for a device with all the benefits of Apple’s own SoCs. However, the company has other plans for future Macs.

Apple may release a Mac Pro with its own chip at any time of the year. This is something that the company itself actually confirmed after the Mac Studio announcement, and Gurman expects it to include the M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips. This model will put Mac Studio in second place and that it is no longer such an attractive alternative for more professional users. Gurman also revealed that the company is also planning to announce a new Mac mini with M2 Pro chip: More suitable for users who need a powerful computer that doesn’t reach the level that Mac Pro can offer.

No Different Purpose for Mac Studio and Mac Pro

This Apple strategy will keep Mac Studio in a no-man’s-land. Gurman even believes that Mac Studio’s days may be numbered, as he assures that the company doesn’t seem to have different “goals” for Mac Studio and Mac Pro., and that both will cover the same user niche. So Mac Studio may not be updated in the future and Mac Pro may have future versions.

Gurman, on the other hand, notes that Apple continues to work on new Mac mini with M2 chip and M2 Pro, though he hopes they won’t include the redesign that was previously rumored. Its release date is also unknown, but it is likely that we will see them from next year. We must not forget that Apple is also planning to update the MacBook Pro with M2 and M2 Pro chips, as well as announce other models of the Mac line with these processors, which can come with an octa-core GPU and a quad-core processor.
