Thanks to Digitimes it was possible to know Apple plans to adopt a “hybrid” OLED technology for iPads 2024. This technology will contribute to thinner devices and reduce costs. As this is the flagship device in the series, it will most likely come to the iPad Pro first.

iPad with OLED display will include innovative technology

What is this technology about? OLED is a combination of glass substrates and the encapsulation of a flexible thin film.. Normally the panels are rigid and have more resistance, but flexible panels win by not including a backlight layer.

Reference to this type of technology has already been made in a report seen and published by Korean The Elec. Hybrid OLED would have been more preferable to Apple Large screens have a tendency to wrinkle, as flexible OLED would be a noticeable drawback. To confirm this rumor, Cupertino would already have a new partner for production. This is Taiwan SMT that will be responsible for the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro panels.

Apple will contribute funding to support its new partner

Before making this change, Apple will continue to work with mini LED backlight. Currently, the product catalog includes this type of display on the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, in addition to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

When will the transition to hybrid OLED take place? After maturing from production to marketing. This will happen in 2024 As long as sufficient progress is made in Taiwan SMT production capacity. Those from Cupertino provide support to find teams dedicated to the process of mini LED panels.

Apple iPad Pro (2021)

iPad Pro with M1 chip is a real beast

With mini-LED panels, it was initially thought that the transition from LCD-IPS would be more complicated. Apple didn’t have a big problem and managed to include it in two different product lines. Except for the latest iPhone 11 (iPhone 12 already had OLED) and the third generation iPhone SE, it wasn’t necessary for the iPhone as most use OLED.

It will be interesting to see if Apple’s plans move forward in time to account for its new hybrid OLED panel.. Once the floor is ready, it remains to be seen whether the quality of these panels is competitive, as well as potentially attractive to customers and new users.
