mcmini it is incredibly efficient and has received particular praise since the release of the version with the M1 chip. This does not mean that it is free from criticism, since Apple is criticized for leaving it “forgotten” and without new hardware versions. While many also deny that those on the block are continuing without updating their design, which mostly dates from 2010. To fix it youtuber took matters into his own hands and decided to turn it into a Nintendo Wii. And the result is wonderful.

The project was carried out by the company Luke Miani, which should have cleared up a few issues before reaching a successful port. The thing is, the story wasn’t as simple as taking the innards of a Mac mini and throwing them into a Nintendo Wii casing. modder He had to introduce various devices into the device, especially in the refrigeration and power parts.

Logically, the first step in turning an Apple computer into a Nintendo Wii was to take it apart and select the components to use. A few months ago Quinn Nelson from chic labs, managed to create a Mac mini 80% smaller than the original; to do this, he had to get rid of the fan and the 150-watt power supply.

Miani chose the same path, albeit with noticeable differences. The fact is that, although he was convinced that the Mac mini could work without active cooling, during his tests he found that equipment quickly overheated when needed, which ultimately affected its performance. To fix this, he turned on a 12-volt fan, very similar in size to the one originally used in the Wii.

Problems of turning a Mac mini into a Nintendo Wii

In the energy section, it was not possible to fit an original power supply from an Apple computer into a Nintendo Wii case. Until the latter had enough power to be an option. The solution was to spawn: Microsoft Surface charger soldered to console connector. From there, the power was sent to the motherboard, passing through a step-down converter.

As for the hull itself, several modifications were also made to it. Not only inside, so there was enough space to house the components of the Mac mini, but also to provide easy access to its ports. To do this, Miani adapted the top of the case, where the ports for connecting GameCube controllers were originally located. Thus, the USB, Thunderbolt and HDMI ports were hidden under a hinged cover located at the top of the device.

The last issue to be addressed was the quality of the wireless connection. Mac mini has three WiFi and Bluetooth sensors, two of which are built into the motherboard. The rest is glued to the metal plate and it is impossible to remove it without cutting it. To avoid this work, in modder decided to use the connection sensor from Nintendo Wii, which coincidentally had the same connector as the one on the Apple computer. And the difference between using it and not using it was terrible, both when plugging in a wireless mouse and when browsing the web.

Undoubtedly, turning a Mac mini into a Nintendo Wii is not for everyone. Not only because it requires a lot of time and labor, but also because pursues an aesthetic rather than a truly functional purpose. In any case, the end result is impressive and makes it clear that where there is ingenuity, there is no limit.
