This Thursday (23), SAMSUNG announced its own solution for satellite communication on smartphones. the company presented NTN 5G network modem so phones can communicate with satellites where there is no cellular network connection. NTN is the abbreviation for Non-Terrestrial Network.

The South Korean giant announces that it plans to integrate this technology into the chip exynosis used in many smartphones of the brand. “Samsung plans to take the lead in developing hybrid terrestrial-NTN communications ecosystems worldwide in preparation for the arrival of 6G,” said Min Goo Kim, Vice President of Communications Processor Development.

Current generation satellite communications promises two-way text messages and calls for emergencies. The company assures that the technology will also enable the sending of photos and videos in the future.

Samsung’s innovation follows Apple’s launch Satellite connection with iPhone 14 and 14 Pro for non-network communication. Meanwhile, Qualcomm announced in January a partnership with Iridium to implement satellite communications for Android phones equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

In recent years, the technology market has been investing more and more in solutions to bring satellite communications to smartphones. The purpose is to present Internet access and voice services in remote areaswhere terrestrial networks do not reach or are of low quality.
