Samsung has been the subject of discussion because of the details presented in the Moon photos taken from their smartphones. Reddit user “ibreakphotos” conducted a series of experiments that showed that details missing from the original photo were added to the final image.

In the tests, a Galaxy S23 was used to take pictures with a gray frame arranged out of focus, blurry, and even in the middle of the Moon. The device added details to all images that were not in the original photo.

According to the user, this proves the Space Zoom feature is fake. The tool was unheard of when it launched in 2020 with the Galaxy S20 Ultra promising 100x zoom. However, according to Reddit user tests, the smartphone would mislead users by tampering with images to achieve a sharper result in photography.

That’s not the only complaint of fake Moon images. In 2019, Huawei was accused of using an image bank to improve the resolution of Earth satellite photos with the P30 Pro, a high-end device at the time. Combining photos may give the wrong idea that the cell phone’s lens can photograph the Moon.

Statement from Samsung

After the discussion, Samsung made a statement on the subject detailing how the brand’s mobile phone image processing software works. In an English post, Samsung unveils artificial intelligence (AI) techniques used by its phones to photograph the bear.

The company’s “Scene Optimizer” feature uses various techniques such as “super resolution” combined with multi-frame processing to improve image clarity. The solution can also optimize exposure and image stabilization to reduce blur.

Identification of the Moon is done with an “AI deep learning model” based on images taken from Earth. However, the company did not provide extra details about the “artificial intelligence detail development mechanism”, which still leaves question marks about the vehicle.

Regarding the use of AI, the company said that the learning-only model is used to “remove residual noise and further improve image detail.” That is, the company does not clarify whether the solution can replace an entire photo to improve the experience of viewing the Moon.

How do you take pictures of the moon with your mobile phone?

Despite the promises of superlens, telescopic zoom, or algorithms that can improve images, a photo of the Moon can be obtained with simpler devices. Amid the Samsung controversy, Twitter user @fahim_al_mamud posted a short tutorial on how to take a quality photo of the satellite.

To do this, the user must enable manual photography settings. It is possible to intuitively manage ISO, shutter speed, exposure value (EV), aperture and white balance (WB) controls. These variables are the same ones used in professional cameras.

In the example posted on Twitter, the user used an ISO 100 at 1/125 with an exposure value of -2 and an aperture of f/4.9. However, each photo may have different settings depending on the lighting conditions at the time the photo was taken.
