First introduced in OS X Mountain Lion over a decade ago, the Chess app received Game Center integration and a visual update. Subsequent macOS updates ignored further improvements to the app.

With macOS Sequoia, Apple has given chess a new look with brighter, more realistic pieces on a textured, gradient background.

According to 9to5Mac, the update improves visual fidelity and also makes it easier to apply by reducing the number of available themes, most notably removing the grass theme. However, users can expect possible additional changes before the official release of macOS Sequoia, which is currently in beta.
