Sony plans to significantly increase production of the PlayStation 5 this year. The company has now reached the milestone of 20 million PS5s sold; much later than intended, due to the known shortage of chips.

Sony announced last week that it wanted to produce more PlayStations. Veronica Rodgers, Sony’s head of Global Sales and Business Operations, told GamesIndustry.biz that significant scale-up is still in the pipeline for this year.

PlayStation 5 was released in November 2020. So it took about 19 months to reach 20 million sales. With the PS4 this went a little faster at 16 months. However, according to Sony, the demand for PS5s is much higher. While it took 9 days for the PS4 to sell 80,000 units, this had already happened in 82 minutes for the PS5.
