Telegram has always been proud to have no i data of its users to the authorities Partly for this reason, despite the lack of standard end-to-end encryption, the app had become popular with those who cared about their privacy and those who wanted to make criminal use of it.
Think of the epidemic of hacking groups, but also the black markets of counterfeit green passes and again the exchange groups of revenge porn images and videos. Still, Telegram may not be that “happy” island immune to all laws — as any reasonable person could have expected.
In Germany Telegram has actively cooperated with local authorities, according to an investigation by the weekly magazine Spiegel. The app is said to have repeatedly shared its users’ data with the BKAthe German Federal Police.
The cooperation would take place to a limited extent in the case of allegations of crimes of terrorism and child pornographywhile Telegram – which is based in Dubai – is said to have been more reluctant to share information useful for making allegations of computer piracy violations.
For many years, Epoch Time writes, Telegram shrugged its shoulders indiscriminately at any government request. Germany could never have gotten cooperation from the app. The change of approach would have taken place only recently.
Even so, the Telegram site still reports, with some pride, the words “until now we have sent a total of 0 bytes of our users’ data to third parties, including governments.”
Telegram stores its users’ data in multiple different servers around the world and is subject to the control of various companies, spin-offs and affiliates. A labyrinth of different jurisdictions and properties, making the life of law enforcement and courts extremely complicated.
The German government, after threatening to make Telegram illegal and convincing other EU countries to do the same, recently admitted that it started a dialogue with the app administrators. Dialogue that probably would have led to the birth of this new and fruitful collaboration between the two sides.
In addition, Telegram has also started to comply with the requests of the authorities when they asked to join a group, a channel dedicated to illegal activities. During the novax protest campaign, the same thing happened several times in Italy.
