While no smartphone has been announced yet with the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1-soc, rumors are already circulating about its successor. Therefore, the leaked Digital Chat Station suggests that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 may offer an unusual configuration.
In a post on Chinese social media platform Weibo, the informant reported that the SM8550 chipset, codenamed Kailua, will be baked in TSMC’s 4nm process, just like its predecessor. It is noteworthy that Qualcomm chose not three but four different CPU cores: one powerful Cortex-X3 core, followed by two Cortex-A720 cores, two Cortex-A710 and three Cortex-A510 cores. In addition, although it is not known how it should perform, an Adreno 740 GPU is mentioned.
It’s not entirely clear why the company would use this scheme. They can choose to use older A710 cores to continue offering 32-bit software support. Arm has stated that at the end of 2020, it intends to switch completely to 64-bit by 2022.
