According to Bloomberg, GlobalFoundries and STMicroelectronics are discussing a possible partnership for a new European chip factory. The two companies want to use government grants to set up a joint office in France. According to some anonymous sources, this site would be used to cook advanced chips efficiently.

At the moment it is not clear whether this production facility will actually be built and the amount that will be included in this investment. In any case, a spokesperson for American GlobalFoundries said it stands ready to work with customers, partners and governments to tackle the global chip shortage. The Italian-French STMicro also embraces the efforts of authorities in the field of the semiconductor industry, although they do not wish to comment further.

If the French fab does indeed come, it will be one of the first to appear thanks to the EU’s Chips Act. In March, Intel announced the Germany-based Magdeburg megafab, in which Team Blue will receive up to €6.8 billion in state funding (40% of the total investment). TSMC will also consider a German branch, but no concrete plans have emerged so far.
