A major upgrade is planned from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group: Auracast is a potentially revolutionary way in which one device can connect to an infinite number of other devices. Currently, one device can send signals to a maximum of two other devices. Auracast should launch in a few months for high-end hardware. It is not yet clear which parameters a target or transmitting devices must meet.
The Auracast principle is part of Bluetooth’s Low Energy options and appears to be mainly developed for notifications in public areas, according to the announcement. For example, SIG talks about running public transport-related advertisements or notifications to everyone connected. Due to the way Bluetooth works, for example, everyone on the train needs to be constantly connected to an Auracast system, which seems unlikely.
Another application is amplifying the sound, for example in a conference room or at a public event. In the spirit of a quiet disco, anyone can open a channel to receive sound directly through wireless headphones. The only limitation of the technology seems to be the supported distance of Auracast; Like all Bluetooth devices, this particular app has a limited range.
