As 2023 comes to a close, it’s time to take stock of what happened during the year. Spotify releases its famous Wrapped, social media is filled with posts from people checking to see if they’ve achieved their goals, and many media outlets are publishing lists of what best of 2023. In this article, I’m going to create one of those lists. One in particular list of scientific books published this year.
But they’re not necessarily the best, as I haven’t read them all to compare. I’ll just talk about some of the more interesting science books that came my way this year.
Eat all types of areas, from food safety to chronobiology. Most of them are books on topics that affect us in everyday life. Or it will help us better understand our history. At the end of the day, scientific dissemination is that. A tool that pushes us to know ourselves better and even act more adequately in everyday life.
5 scientific books published in 2023
Of the many interesting scientific books published this year, I have chosen 5. The order is completely randomthere is no greater preference to the first.
Don’t let anything keep you from sleepingauthor: Angeles Bonmati
In this book, chronobiologist M. Angeles Bonmati gives a very comprehensive overview all about sleep. In a very clear and simple manner, with some interesting historical data, everything that happens to us while we sleep is described in detail.
The book covers the most daily from our sleep to more specific details such as the sleep of animals or people in space.
I had this book for several months now, and since then, whenever I had a question about sleep, no matter what it was, I would go to its pages and find the answer. This makes it clear how comprehensive this scientific book is.
Additionally, some tips may be helpful for people with sleep problems. Of course, as the author often recalls, This book is not just for insomnia sufferers.. Anyone can enjoy and learn by reading it.
Parasites: minor characters in our storyJose Antonio Garrido and Concha Mesa
This is one of those scientific books that helps us understand who we are and where we come from. Because, as the name suggests, parasites have been present throughout our history and, in a sense, shaped us into who we are.
So annoying that they have caused and continue to cause millions of deaths a year, and so necessary that our world would be without them would have collapsed.
IN Parasites, its two authors tell us about some of the most important parasites that infect humans in one way or another. And they do it in some way very amenso that, through story. Because many of the great events that we study in history books were marked by the presence of parasites. But they are not just a thing of the past.
Recently, influencer Lucia Pombo showed on her networks a worm that got under the skin of her foot during a trip to the beaches of Zanzibar. The person responsible was one of the parasites mentioned in this scientific book. Because, indeed, it helps us understand our past, but also our present.
Don’t sink your teeth into pocho tomatoes.Mario Sanchez
What if we have a seemingly great tomato, but with little form? Many people choose to cut off the moldy part and eat the rest of the tomato. The same goes for apples, cucumbers, strawberries and any other fruits and vegetables that deserve attention. But this is a huge mistake, since fungi affect the entire surface of food, even seemingly healthy ones. Must throw it away entirely.
This is one of many everyday facts about food safety revealed in this scientific book. Cross-contamination of food preparation or hand-washing materials and foodstuffs recurring themes, among many others. Meat, eggs and salads are some of the most mentioned foods.
Throw it all away dangerous kitchen habits That’s what we’ve learned. So whether you’re a cooking aficionado or only go there to heat up the dishes you religiously bring from your parents’ house, this book is for you.
Open your eyes!Cum Lillo
This This is not just another book about vision.. It goes beyond simply explaining the mechanisms by which our brains convert the light that enters our eyes from the objects we see into images.
This scientific book certainly explains it, but it goes much further. He tells everything that concerns him in a very interesting way. vision, from explaining optical illusions to animal vision, through eye-related diseases, and even the impact of vision on art. It tells how artists used their knowledge of vision to make their works more attractive, and how some of their works were altered precisely because their vision deteriorated.
All this is also explained very musicalbecause the book has its own playlist, where each song in one way or another corresponds to one of the chapters.
From grocery stores to hypermarkets, Miguel Angel Luruenha
Miguel Angel Luruenha has important books on food safety. But this one goes beyond that. In this case we are talking about our diet over the last 40 years in a much more social way. Analyzes how the food industry has advanced, just like us, society.
Our daily routine has changed and so has our diet. Now we live faster, but we also try to eat healthier, although this does not always work out. But at the same time, we are bombarded with a huge amount of information from social networks that was not available before. four decades. Not all of this information is reliable. Therefore, in order to feed yourself in accordance with the achievements of society, but without falling into false myths, this book is another basic one to be published in 2023.
Perhaps the Three Wise Men will still have time to read one of these books or some non-fiction books. Because science is always a good gift.
