Thursday Elon Musk I met Twitter employees. During the meeting, Musk shared his plans change the social network, suggesting some of the changes will affect the workforce firsthand. For example, he foresaw that it might be necessary to fire at least some of the current managers and employees and that the current smart working model might be questioned.

In late April, the billionaire made a $44 billion offer to buy the company. Then, in May, the takeover had stalled after Musk publicly challenged the data shared by Twitter about the number of bots and fake accounts on the social network. After a tug-of-war that lasted several weeks, the Twitter board agreed to share some of the data needed to conduct an independent analysis on the problem of fake accounts with the billionaire.

The meeting with the employees could be a good sign: it seems that negotiations have finally got off the ground and that the takeover is proceeding in a less hostile tone.

Elon Musk explained that he wants to make Twitter a bit more like WeChat and TikTok, aiming to exceed the ceiling of 1 billion registered users on the social network. This is only possible if the services currently offered by Twitter are expanded. We need to make sure that users are always entertained and informed thanks to Twitter.

The comparison is with WeChat, a super app which offers a rich range of products: in China it is used for everything from payments to messaging and social activities. The equivalent of WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, Amazon and PayPal in one app.

There is no such thing as WeChat outside of China. In China, users practically live on WeChat, if we can recreate that on Twitter it will be a huge hit

said Elon Musk.

Thursday marked the first meeting between Elon Musk and the company’s employees since the billionaire proposed to take over Twitter. During the meeting – which took place virtually – the employee representatives were able to ask a number of questions to Elon Musk.

Elon Musk also explained that he attaches great importance to the role Twitter has – and can have – in informing people. “I think Twitter can improve a lot by keeping people informed about the most serious stuff.” To do this, the billionaire wants to change the social algorithm, making it more like TikTok.

He then reiterated his priority of beating bot machines. “Make a troll army on Twitter it should be much more expensive than it is now,” he added, referring to the disarming ease with which it is now possible to buy and use fake accounts on the social network.
