Tesla vehicles with Autopilot software have been implicated in 273 crashes last year, far more than previously known, according to regulators and this gives concrete evidence of the actual performance of its autonomous functions.

Figures released for the first time by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Wednesday show that Tesla vehicles accounted for nearly 70% of the 392 crashes in which driver assistance intervened.

And most of the deaths and serious injuries, some of which date back more than a year. Eight Tesla accidents have occurred up to June 2021.

Of the six fatalities listed in the data set released Wednesday, five were linked to Tesla vehicles. Some date back to 2019.

Tesla has been targeted by federal authorities in recent months due to a growing number of investigations, product recalls and even public reprimands against the company.

The new dataset is linked to a federal executive order issued last summer that requires automakers to report crashes involving driver assistance to assess whether the technology poses safety risks.

Tesla vehicles have been found to disable their advanced driver assistance system.Autopilot, about a second before impact, according to regulators.

recipient of something The NHTSA required manufacturers to report crashes that used the software within 30 seconds of the crash.partly to allay fears that manufacturers would cover up crashes by claiming the software was not in use at the time of the crash.

These technologies hold great promise for improving safety, but we need to understand how these vehicles perform in real-life situations.“NHTSA Administrator Stephen Cliff said in a media conversation.

Reports are a new window for systems like Autopilot, but the database is still very green. with many unknowns even in the raw data and remaining questions.

The data is not easily comparable between different manufacturers because it does not include information such as the number of kilometers driven by different driver assistance systems or the extent to which they are implemented in manufacturers’ fleets.
