Selected best astronomy curiosities of the week produced by TecMundo and #AstroMiniBR collaborators profile in x I want to share with you a little about our fantastic and extraordinary universe. Check it out below!

#1: The largest telescope on Brazilian soil!

Operated by the National Laboratory for Astrophysics (LNA) in Minas Gerais, the Pico dos Dias Observatory (OPD) houses the largest telescope on Brazilian soil: The Perkin-Elmer telescope, an important milestone in Brazilian astronomy and scientific research in the country.

This telescope has a high-precision equatorial mount and a primary mirror with a diameter of 1.60 meters (and almost a ton!); This allows efficient light collection with excellent resolution. Equipped with a variety of instruments, including state-of-the-art CCD cameras and spectrographs, the telescope is capable of performing a wide range of astronomical observations, from the study of near-Earth asteroids to the study of distant galaxies.

In addition, the Pico dos Dias Observatory offers suitable climatic conditions and a strategic location for astronomical observations, away from the light and atmospheric pollution of major cities. Real data that guarantees obtaining high quality data for national and international scientific research.

#2: Malakoff Tower for astronomical observations

Located in the heart of Recife, Malakoff Tower is an iconic structure that has played an important role in the history and science of the region. It takes its name from one of the towers of Sevastopol castle, the symbol of the Crimean War.

With an imposing height of 35 meters, the tower was built in the 19th century as part of the local navy’s defense and tactical system. However, in addition to its military importance Malakoff Tower also has a deep connection with astronomy. At the top of the tower is an astronomical observatory established in the late 19th century. This observatory was used for astronomy studies and the precise determination of local time, contributing to maritime navigation and time synchronization.

If you are coming from Recife or planning your trip there, be sure to visit the Malakoff Tower, a historical and scientific landmark in Pernambuco!

#3: Introduction to Astronomy and Astrophysics

Registration is now open for the INPE (National Institute for Space Research) Introduction to Astronomy and Astrophysics Course. which will take place between 22-26 July this year..

Aimed at teachers, scientific communicators and undergraduate students, the course offers a unique opportunity to explore the wonders of the Cosmos. With an accessible and informative approach, the course provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental principles of astronomy and astrophysics.
