After the European Union, the government of the Brazil is considering required Apple to switch to the default USB-C on all of its products, including iPhones. The proposal was justified with the aim of reducing waste and in particular the so-called electronic waste.
In fact, in Apple’s particular case, the company has been phasing out the Lightning listing from all of its most recent products for several years now. In all likelihood, the iPhones released in 2023, i.e. the iPhones 15, will all have a USB-C input and not that Lightning The new European regulation and the Brazilian bill would simply impose by law what is a phenomenon that is already underway.
Instead, these laws will have the noticeable effect of imposing a single standard for all those small electronic products that still use different standards today, unnecessarily increasing the number of cables and chargers consumers are forced to keep at home.
In Brazil it is Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações to push for a new regulation that will wipe the slate clean of the various standards, by requiring all manufacturers to adopt USB-C. Even in the US, something is starting to move: a group of Democratic parliamentarians is working on a very similar proposal.
Anatel’s proposal foresees the obligation to switch to USB-C from July 1, 2024.
