The researchers looked at 23 studies, conducted in 15 countries over a period from 1990 to 2021, including England and the United States. The studies included data on 29,286 couples with successful pregnancies. Thanks to surveys and medical records, each study examined the level of anxiety or depression in mothers and fathers. And what came out? The result shows that the risk of co-depression increases in both parents after birth of the child

Here are some key statistics. During pregnancy, about 1.72% of couples suffer from depression, while 12 weeks after delivery the percentage rises to 2.37%. And if even more time elapses, from 3 to 12 months after delivery, it reaches 3.18%.

The studies analyzed the parents’ risk of suffering from depression at the same time or at different times. The result sees 11 percent of new mothers and one-tenth of new fathers in high-income countries experiencing depression during pregnancy. After the birth of the child, it rises to 13% for women and 9% for men. Further, the father was three times as anxious as the mother was depressed.
