A few days ago we informed you that Nikon is working on a compact camera aimed at getting the attention of content creators. Now we learn that this is the future of the company at the expense of a key segment in the history of photography.

According to media reports Nikkei, the Japanese giant of optics and cameras will cease production of new single-lens reflex cameras. This is how part of the millions of photographers who use Nikon in their daily lives die.

The death of DSLRs is long overdue as mirrorless alternatives have boosted image quality, allowing consumers to use smaller, lighter products.

According to the Nikkei, Nikon will continue to manufacture and distribute its current SLR models, but will focus development of new models exclusively on mirrorless (mirrorless, colloquially referred to as compact) models.

Just last month Nikon has announced the end of production of its two most affordable SLR cameras, the D3500 and D5600. stating that he would like to focus more on “medium to high-end cameras and lenses designed for professional and amateur photographers“.

Last year, according to the Nikkei, Nikon has sold over 400,000 SLRs, which is at odds with the decision to exit such a lucrative market.

Despite everything, compact cameras have eaten the field. Not only that, but smartphones themselves have advanced so much that they are a real and sufficient option for hundreds of millions of potential customers.

Canon, the market leader in SLR cameras, has made a similar move away from this technology.and last year announced that its EOS-1D X Mark III will be its latest flagship DSLR.

So, just like a house of cards falling down, we are watching the entire industry move in this new direction.: compact cameras are already fighting for the smartphone market. For now, SLR cameras will remain only for high ranges.
