Stop selling all iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 It is happening in Colombia, by order of a court in Bogotá. The decision was made after a complex and delicate intellectual property process. Applethe judge argued, would have infringed some patents on 5G technology owned by Cupertino.

The court temporarily blocked the import of iPhones 12 and 13 into the country. These are the two most recent smartphone models from Apple, which will be introducing the expected new generation next September, namely the new iPhone 14. It is not clear whether the patent dispute will also affect smartphones that come out in a few months.

The controversy over the authorship of the patents in question had been going on for months. Apple is said to have acknowledged the paternity of the technology to the Swedish manufacturer, previously disputing the high royalties the company required. But the Bogotá court wanted nothing to do with it.

The paradox? Over there Colombia does not currently have 5G networks. Basically, the imports would have been blocked due to a dispute over an inactive functionality in the South American country.

However, the situation could be unlocked soon, provided the US company decides to pay what Ericsson owes for the use of its technology. But this doesn’t seem like the choice Apple made right away, which has already announced its intention to challenge the court decision and appeal.
