Amazon experience a new method of zero emission delivery In the UK, the e-commerce giant will equip its drivers with a small fleet of freight pulled by electric bicycles The latter solution will be used for the so-called last mile, ie when the parcels leave the distribution centers to be delivered to the customer’s home.

Where possible – for example because the distance between the distribution center and the house is minimal – the drivers will simply walk and deliver the packages by hand.

The project aims to facilitate Amazon’s ambitious climate goals. By 2030, the company aims to reduce its own by 50% Co2 emissions Parcel delivery is one of Amazon’s biggest sources of pollution.

In the UK, cargo bikes will be used to deliver 1 million parcels each year. Added to this is the latest generation of electric vans from Amazon. The latter vehicles are produced by the American company Rivian. There are already 1,000 i Amazon’s electric vans deployed in the UK. But the fleet is destined to grow over the years and replace the entire fleet of endothermic motor vehicles.

“The combination of foot and bicycle deliveries,” explains Amazon, “will allow us to do without thousands of deliveries per van every year, with enormous environmental benefits”.

It starts from Londa, where the local government has for some time set up some areas with so-called “ultra-low emissions”. These are areas where car traffic is discouraged by the imposition of very expensive tolls.
