The DNA reveals the mysterious origin of the Etruscans, a huge fascination for historians and scholars, who have been confronted with this civilization for centuries. Descendants of Neolithic and Bronze Age herders, the Etruscans are the subject of study for several reasons. One is certainly the language: it seems that they spoke a non-Indo-European language that has resisted over time.

A “linguistic perseverance“, as Professor Caramelli of the University of Florence defines it, able to demonstrate the mixing with the Italic people. In the second millennium BC, the Etruscan civilization assimilated into it some Italian oratorios, paving the way for the creation of a single language.

As far as we know, the Etruscans were mostly craftsmen and skilled politicians, even if the difficulty of understanding their language left many doubts. One mainly concerns theirs origin: According to the Greek historian Herodotus, they migrated to Italy from Greece and Anatolia.

Throughout the ages, scholars have been unconvinced of this theory because they lack sufficient archaeological evidence. In an effort to solve the mystery, 82 DNA samples from Etruscan men who lived between AD 800 and 1000 were analyzed and then compared with other populations. The discovery was incredible.

The Etruscans had genes related to the Latins who lived in Rome and the surrounding areas, albeit with some fairly obvious differences. The team also emphasized that the Etruscans’ DNA changed when they came into contact with the Roman Empire.
