Open fiber has announced that it has entered into an agreement with the router and modem manufacturer AVM. Open Fiber partners (from Vodafone to Fastweb, etc.) can offer their customers with FTTH fiber the modem FRITZ!Box 5530 Fiberglassthat is a hardware that can really provide a connection of up to 2.5 Gbps.

While many companies have until now claimed to offer connections at 2.5 Gbps (or even 5 Gbps, citing the controversial Iliad case), the truth is that practically none of them offered their customers a state-of-the-art modem that is materially capable of wash these features (via cable or Wi-Fi, it doesn’t matter).

The ‘regular’ customer tends to keep the modem made available on loan for use by the operator, so that he only uses a fraction of the potential of his FTTH network. On the contrary, most geeks had to resign themselves to the idea of spending a lot of money to buy a modem that could offer the performance of the latest generation of fiber networks. The agreement with AVM should finally resolve this paradoxical situation.

This is a European partnership to facilitate and promote the roll-out of FTTH 2.5 Gbps broadband by retail operators who can deliver the service to end users very quickly and with all the benefits of ‘local’ manufacturing. Our FRITZ! boxes are all Made in Europe and enable the rapid commercialization of new technologies. It is a pride for AVM to have developed this offering with the aim of providing the best Wi-Fi browsing customer experience”

said Giovanni Cristi, Head of Telco Italy and Senior Business Development Manager of AVM Italia.

In the (hopefully) near future, network operators will be able to offer their customers the new FRITZ!Box 5530 Fiber Optic Modem that is compatible with standard wifi 6 and fitted with a door 2.5 Gbps LAN (plus two more 1Gbps). The modem also supports Mesh technology with MU-MIMO.
