Ghana has declared an epidemic caused by the disease. Marburg virus after confirmation of the death of two people caused by the pathogen. According to WHO, more than 90 contacts have been identified and followed, including healthcare workers and others in the local community.

Marburg virus disease is classified by the agency as highly contagious. The virus is in the same family as the one that causes Ebola.

Based on data from previous outbreaks, the disease can kill 24% to 88% of infected people; the average is 50%.

In August of last year, an outbreak of the virus was confirmed in Guinea and was brought under control that same year.

Marburg disease can be transmitted to humans from animals such as fruit bats. Transmission between humans occurs through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected persons or contaminated surfaces and materials. There are currently no approved drugs or vaccines against the disease, and treatment consists of treating the symptoms and giving the patient water.
