The original site of one of the oldest Mars meteorites is a rock formed on the red planet. Dating back to 4.5 billion years ago, it was eliminated in space by a violent impact about 10 million years ago. Then the meteorite arrived on Earth. This was discovered by an international group of researchers led by Anthony Lagain of the Australian University Curtin.

It all started in 2011 when a meteorite named . was identified Black Beauty in Western Sahara. It was a 300 gram fragment of basalt breccia from Mars that was 4.5 billion years old. Researchers tried to find its origin. How? They developed intricate software that compared the appearance of the rock to many high-definition images. They covered 90 million impact craters on Mars. All to look for similarities between them.

The collected data made it possible to get to the original site of the rock. Well it’s a crater 40 kilometers in diameter of the name Khujirt, located in the southern hemisphere of Mars. The crater was created by an impact with another meteorite from 1.5 billion years ago. The surface layers have revealed an ancient rock formation linked to the planet’s initial formation.

The second impact it dates to between 5 and 10 million years ago. It produced a new crater with fragments that escaped the planet’s gravity. Among these the NWA 7034 who ended his journey against the earth. This fragment is essential to reconstruct how Mars came to be. It may also be helpful to learn more about planet Earth, as no monster exists due to tectonic activity.
