Well, there are those who prefer to go the other way. A new study published in Nature Communications shows how some now-dead microbes are able to generate enough energy to charge any device while being as efficient as a battery. thanks to the evaporation of their own sweat.

We are talking specifically about G.ulfreducens, microbe which is superior in power to its competitor known as Geobacter Sulferreducens, as it can generate it even when dead, and in greater numbers.

This new study showed that a biofilm containing these microbes generates electricity from sweat as it evaporates. And it is that the layer that creates the ecosystem of these bacteria, interspersed with electrodes, can be embedded in a polymer patch and then delivered to our skin.

Experiments have confirmed that a spot of them on the skin kept working for at least 18 hours and powered a voltage sensor that measured pulse, respiration, and other body signals as if it were any smart watch or smart bracelet.

But the potential here could be much greater than that of wearables. If it can be done on a large scale, perhaps this technology could be a way to use the evaporation that constantly occurs on our planet to generate energy.
