Even the google search engine it can go offline, leaving us with more than a few dilemmas about our reliance on the products of a handful of web giants. It happened on August 8, when the search engine stopped working properly for millions of people around the world.

In the same hours, Google had reported that one of its US data centers, in Iowa, had been taken offline after a electrical short circuit. Three different electricians who arrived at the scene suffered minor injuries in the accident. The company went on to say that the two events are unrelated.

In addition to the search engine, they also went offline Google Maps and some other applications from the Mountain View giant. Again: other dilemmas about our reliance on Google’s products. Have any of you ever thought of downloading Bing Maps on your phone? Here in fact.

Fortunately, the inefficiencies were fixed relatively quickly. Google’s services were offline for just 30 minutes. Most users probably didn’t notice as the problem was limited to a few specific geographic areas, such as Portugal and Pakistan.

When attempting to perform a Google search, the affected users received the message back: “The server registered an error and was unable to process your request.” Google then clarified that the down was due to an update that would have compromised the proper configuration of some of its data centers.
