We’ve been waiting almost a year for Google’s planned redesign of Android Auto to hit cars around the world. Here are all the tips on how to use Google’s infotainment and navigation tool.
After a premature leak revealed a split-screen user interface last fall, we saw one project make an official announcement at I/O this spring.
Now a new Android Auto update is coming out, and despite what you might expect, it doesn’t bring this long-awaited feature.
On paper, Android Auto 8.0 seems like the perfect opportunity to launch a promised redesign this year, codenamed Coolwalk. After all, it’s a round number.
So, although Google is limited to the continuation of Android Auto v7.9 with the next number on the list, it’s easy to see why some users expect major changes from this release.
Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case. Android Auto 8.0 is rolling out to drivers around the world right now without any sign of Coolwalk or other design changes, according to 9to5Google.
On the contrary, it looks like this release is another round of bug fixes after a particularly volatile year for the platform.. Presumably this update is about behind-the-scenes changes or, if we’re lucky, the basis for new tweaks in the future.
Although Coolwalk is still missing, it is very possible that the drivers will reach through a minor update within 8.0, activated by Google as soon as it is ready.
And it’s yet another chapter in the ever-twisted saga of Android in cars. In addition to delayed updates and blank screens, Google has finally killed Android Auto on phones for good.
Left drivers to rely solely on the assisted driving mode.an inferior service in almost every way and still missing out on some much needed features.
As Apple continues to develop its next-generation CarPlay platform, Google should step up in this competition. After all, iOS has supported split-screen in cars for nearly three years now.
