Many years ago, license plates in our country had a distinction at the beginning (to the left of the license plate) indicating which province the car or motorcycle belonged to. When we entered the European Union, we adopted some rules and they ended up changing their design.
So we’ve gone from a province to showing a single E for Spain. In Europe, vehicles have a letter on them indicating which country they belong to. In France they carry the letter F, in Italy they carry the letter I, and in Portugal they carry the letter P. Some require two letters, such as the United Kingdom (GB).
In addition to this beginning, it is followed by four numbers and the last three letters. We used to have two letters in Spain, but by including three letters, we increase the possible variations of this new method by 80 million.. Although they can be customized.
Well, right now in Spain we deliver a car with the letters LZV, as Autobild explained, so it should be assumed that combinations with the letter L are about to end. And that’s a big change, as this letter began to appear on cars and motorcycles in 2019.
At the current pace, by September we would have changed our license plate for the first time in three years, and cars coming from the factory would have the letter M. The first license plate with this change will be “0000 MBB”.
And why MBB and not MAA? Because, as you remember, in Spain the use of vowels on license plates is not allowed due to problems with legibility and safety, DGT assures.
From September 2019 to September 2022, license plates beginning with the letter L have seen their beginning and end, being the letter that survived the first-person coronavirus crisis and the semiconductor crisis. Two reasons why the letter L has lived among us for so long.
