New water map resulting from ten years of research Anthem It brings unprecedented insights into the geological formation of the planet, pointing to regions with the highest concentrations of minerals transformed by the action of water.

Contrary to popular belief, Mars still has many surprises, especially regarding the movement of water in its geological formation. Proof of this are the areas indicated on the new map.

The map was created based on data from equipment from the European Special Agency (ESA) and the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

ESA’s “Observatory for Mineralogy, Water, Ice and Activity” (OMEGA, short for French) produces a global map of the planet and produces better resolution information.

NASA’s “Compact Reconnaissance Image Spectrometer for Mars” (CRISM) performs more specific mapping that is fundamental to the analysis of the top attractions where missions will land.

Acting as a complement, the tools have compiled and analyzed their data over the past decade. As a result, a magnificent map was developed with the signature of water in the geological formation of the planet.

The map shows the regions with the highest concentrations of clay and salt, formed by the interaction of water with rocks. Examples of regions are the Jezero crater and Oxia Planum, which contain a high concentration of clays composed of smectite and vermiculite, rich in minerals such as iron and magnesium.

However, more things need to be examined before various questions can be answered satisfactorily. These findings are just indications of how water behaved to form the geological soil of Mars.

However, thanks to the new tool, missions can be scheduled and sent to larger scientific interests, opening a new era for exploration.
