Meta’s CEO and Founder, Mark Zuckerbergis not happy with ‘s interest Apple for virtual reality. In a recent interview with The Verge magazine, Zuckerberg stated that his company is “in philosophical competition” with Apple for the future of virtual reality and the so-called metaverse.

As is known, Apple is working on three different headsets with VR and AR capabilities. Mark Zuckerberg is convinced of the superiority of his company’s ecosystem, although details about Apple’s products and services are still very scarce.

The point, Zuckerberg explains, isn’t so much about the power and functions of the individual viewers, but about the kind of ecosystem to be created. “We are in philosophical competition with Apple,” he repeated. Zuckerberg accuses Apple of trying to create a closed ecosystem, one in which the company would have total control over hardware and services — similar to what it already does with iPhones today.

Mark Zuckerberg is convinced that virtual reality will be fundamental to creating the metaverse. «It is essential that the metaverse is interoperable and open,” he explained. “Different developers and companies should participate on an equal footing in its creation.”

“Apple isn’t as selfless as it claims to be,” he said, adding that the bitten apple’s influence in the emerging virtual reality and metaverse industries could harm consumers and developers alike.

Apple is working on three different AR/VR products. The first, which could be called Apple Reality Pro, is an advanced viewer for high-end mixed reality. It is rumored to cost between $1,000 and $3,000. It should be released in 2023.

Then in 2024 it will be the turn of a AR/VR viewer cheaper and eventually Apple’s first smart glasses with augmented reality support will come later.
