The Council of the European Union gave final approval to the directive which, from 2024, requires the approval of a single connector for all ‘small’ electronics products, starting with smartphones. In fact, the new directive penalizes the death of Lightning from Apple.

The new rule, which restricts the use ofUSB-C, will apply to a wide variety of devices from 2024. The list includes:

Among other things, the directive also imposes a system of: labelthat manufacturers will have to put on the packaging, allowing the consumer to understand the specifications and charging performance of the device, in addition, he will also have to indicate whether or not the charger is included in the package.

Following the adoption of the European Parliament’s position by the Council today, the legislative act will be adopted. After signature by the President of the European Parliament and the President of the Council, the law will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union and enter into force 20 days after publication. The new rules will apply 24 months after entry into force

reads out a note published by the Council of the EU.

The Commission is also considering obliging manufacturers to no longer include the charger in the smartphone package, but that decision will only be taken in four years.

The European legislator – also in this case, delaying the decision until the next few years – said then that it was interested in evaluating a regulation of wireless charging, imposing requirements and standards that apply to all manufacturers.
