A California startup wants the first flying car mass. The first prototype, the Model Awas presented at a launch event at Draper University in San Mateo, California.
Model A will be able to fly, with vertical start, and will have a maximum range of 110 km on a single charge. The California prototype will have to compete against fierce competitors, including AirCar and Pal-V. All in the running to produce the first true flying car. Not a simple VTOL, but a versatile vehicle that is comfortable both on the road and in the air.
A flying car must first and foremost be a real car, so it must be able to drive on normal roads and park anywhere. It also needs to be able to take off vertically, if you need a launch pad, what problem do you solve?
he said Jim DuchovnyCEO and co-founder of the startup.
The Model A for longer journeys can transform into a small biplane. After vertical take-off, Model A turns horizontally, while the cabin remains stable at all times thanks to a patented mechanism (no roller coaster effect).
But will we all really have a flying car tomorrow? Probably not, governments will hardly allow it: to drive the Model A, you still have a pilot’s license.
